World Youth Day (WYD) is one of the most exciting and life‑changing events in the life of the Catholic Church, bringing together young people from across the globe to celebrate faith, friendship, and the joy of following Christ. Established in 1985 by Saint John Paul II, WYD was born from the powerful response of young people who longed to gather, connect and encounter something greater than themselves.
What began as a simple invitation quickly grew into a worldwide movement. Today, WYD continues to inspire millions of young people to come together in prayer, worship, and celebration, whilst sharing cultures, stories and a common hope rooted in Christ.
Each year, World Youth Day is celebrated locally within dioceses around the world. Then, every three to four years, the Church hosts an international gathering where hundreds of thousands of young pilgrims travel to one city to celebrate alongside the Pope. These events are filled with vibrant liturgies, music, catechesis, and unforgettable moments of unity and joy.The next international World Youth Day will take place in Seoul, South Korea, from 3–8 August 2027. This promises to be an incredible opportunity for young people to experience the global Church, deepen their faith and be part of something truly inspiring.
At its heart, World Youth Day is an invitation to step out in faith, to encounter Christ in a powerful way, and to discover that you are part of something much bigger: a joyful, living, worldwide community of believers.
